Periodontal Care

periodontalGum disease, (also known as periodontal disease) is a bacterial infection of the gums that can develop into serious dental issues such as; bleeding of the gums, loose teeth, and a painful brushing experience.

The biggest factor in causing periodontal disease is plaque formation due to improper or lack of dental hygiene such as regular brushing and flossing. Periodontitis occurs when the gums begin to separate from the teeth and form pockets. These pockets are often below the gum lines and therefore difficult to reach and effectively clean. Bacterial toxins can begin to build inside these pockets and can cause the bone and connective tissues in the tooth to breakdown. Periodontitis, if left untreated can result in the removal of the tooth.

Good tooth brushing and flossing is very important but also having professional maintenance done by a hygienist is also an important part of good oral care. These highly trained dental professionals can remove deposit on your teeth which tooth brushing alone cannot. Car analogies sometimes come to mind when talking about teeth and one that is often quoted is” Just like a car, teeth need maintenance. “ You would not consider your car to be well  maintained if all you did was wash it. No, you take it in for professional service, Be sure you get regular professional service for your teeth as well.
